Microbiology is the science that deals with the study of single-celled and multi-celled microorganisms, as well as non-nuclear organisms such as viruses, including some eukaryotes such as fungi and protozoa, as well as prokaryotes such as bacteria and some algae. Despite the developments in this science, it is estimated that only 0.03% of the microbes on the globe have been studied. Although germs were discovered 300 years ago, microbiology is still in its infancy compared to zoology, botany and entomology. Microbiology is used in the security and forensic fields and in the military fields in the production of weapons of mass destruction.
