Ibn al-Rumi was a slave of Abdullah bin Issa, and there is no doubt that he is of Roman origin, as he mentions and confirms him in places in his book. His mother was of Persian origin, a pious, righteous and merciful woman, as is evident from his lamentation for her. Ibn Al-Roumi is a great poet of the Abbasid era, from the class of Bashar and Al-Mutanabbi. His life witnessed many tragedies that left their traces on his poems. His poems varied between praise, satire, pride and lamentation. He was one of the distinguished poets of his time, and he has a book of printed poetry. Taha Hussein said about him, "We know that he was unlucky in his life, and he was not likable to people, but he hated them, and he was envious as well, and his matter was not limited to his misfortune, but perhaps his bad nature, he was sharp tempered, turbulent, He is ill-tempered, weak-nerved, very acute, almost to the point of extravagance.” Ibn Khallikan said in his description: “The famous poet, the owner of the wondrous arrangement and strange generation, delves into the rare meanings, extracts them from their place and highlights them in the best form, and does not leave the meaning until he completes it to the end, and does not remain in it.”
