Book Description
Vertebrate Reproduction is a comprehensive book on the reproductive biology of vertebrates, written by Volker Blüm. The book covers the anatomy, physiology, and behavior of reproduction in a wide range of vertebrate species, including fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals.
The book is divided into chapters that cover each aspect of reproduction in detail. The first chapter provides an overview of the reproductive system and its function in vertebrates. Subsequent chapters focus on topics such as gametogenesis, fertilization, pregnancy, and lactation.
Blüm's writing is clear and concise, making the book accessible to both students and researchers in the field of reproductive biology. He includes numerous illustrations and diagrams to help readers understand complex concepts.
One of the strengths of the book is its comparative approach. Blüm compares and contrasts the reproductive strategies of different vertebrate groups, highlighting similarities and differences between species. This approach provides a broader perspective on the evolution of reproductive traits and allows readers to better understand the diversity of reproductive strategies that exist in the animal kingdom.
Volker Blum
Volker Blüm is a German zoologist and author working in the field of comparative vertebrate reproductive biology. He is an expert in the field of vertebrate reproduction and has done extensive research in this area.
Blüm was born in Frankfurt am Main in 1952 and studied biology at the Goethe University in Frankfurt. After his studies, he worked at various research institutions in Germany and abroad, including the Max Planck Institute for Behavioral Physiology in Seewiesen, the University of Paris and the Laboratory for Comparative Endocrinology at the University of California in Los Angeles.
In his research work, Blüm dealt primarily with the reproductive biology of amphibians and reptiles. He studied the physiology and biochemistry of reproduction, the development of sex organs and hormones, and the behavior of males and females during the mating season.
In 1992 Blüm published his most important work, the book "Comparative Reproductive Biology of Vertebrates". In this book he presents a comprehensive summary of the reproductive biology of vertebrates and describes the anatomical, physiological and behavioral differences between different species.
The book has become a standard reference in the field of reproductive biology and is used by researchers and students around the world as an important source of information and research direction.
Blüm has also published numerous scientific articles and papers dealing with various aspects of vertebrate reproductive biology. He is a member of several scientific societies and has received numerous awards for his research work.
