Tachyon Publications is a distinguished independent publishing house dedicated to science fiction and fantasy literature. Founded in 1995 in San Francisco by Jacob Weisman, Tachyon has built a reputation for producing high-quality literary works, including novels, short story collections, and anthologies that often push the boundaries of imaginative storytelling.
The press has earned recognition for its commitment to excellence, with several of its titles receiving prestigious awards. In 2013, Tachyon published Nancy Kress’ After the Fall, Before the Fall, During the Fall, which won both the Nebula Award and the Locus Award for Best Novella. In the same year, Brandon Sanderson’s The Emperor’s Soul, also published by Tachyon, won the Hugo Award for Best Novella, further cementing the press’s reputation for championing exceptional speculative fiction.
Before founding Tachyon, Jacob Weisman was also involved in literary publishing through Thirteenth Moon magazine (1992–1994), which showcased an eclectic mix of short stories, poetry, and essays. The magazine featured contributions from a remarkable roster of authors, including Ursula K. Le Guin, Michael Bishop, Vicki Aron, Brandon Sanderson, Simon Baker, Alma Garcia, and many others, reflecting Weisman's early commitment to innovative and diverse voices in speculative literature.
Today, Tachyon Publications continues to focus on works that combine literary sophistication with imaginative depth, producing stories that appeal to both devoted fans and newcomers to the science fiction and fantasy genres. By nurturing emerging talents while also publishing established authors, Tachyon has positioned itself as a leading force in contemporary speculative fiction, dedicated to exploring the limitless possibilities of the imagination and delivering extraordinary reading experiences.
