تركيا الحديثة التي نشأت في النصف الأول من القرن العشرين، رفعت — كجزء لا يتجزأ من إعلان علمانيتها — شعار «شرقت وداع»؛ أي «وداعًا أيها الشرق». لحظة الانفصال تلك عن العرب والدولة العثمانية التقطها «نقولا حداد» وصنع على ضوء معالمها التاريخية وشخصياتها البارزة ما اعتبره بمثابة «ديباجة» لعصر جديد، وعبر عدة روايات (أُطلق عليها «روايات الاتحاد العربيِّ العام») تحمل طابعًا تاريخيًّا؛ تأتي روايته «وداعًا أيها الشرق» مستعرضًا في قالب سرديٍّ روائيٍّ محكم يمتاز بالسلاسة عددًا غير قليل من الوقائع الحقيقية كما عاصرها بنفسه. تدور جُلُّ أحداث الرواية بين «أنقرة» عاصمة تركيا الجديدة حيث ناضل الغازي مصطفى باشا كمال «أتاتورك» من أجل إقرار الجمهورية التركية، وبين «الأستانة» عاصمة الخلافة العثمانية التي سُحب البساط من تحت قدميها.

Nicolas Haddad

He is a journalist, scientist and poet. He was born in Sidon, Lebanon, and studied pharmacy at the “Syrian Protestant College” (later the American University of Beirut) and then immigrated to Egypt and settled there. He worked in the press and edited in Al-Ahram newspaper and others. He traveled to New York in 1907 and co-authored the university edition with Farah Antoine. He returned to Cairo and participated with his wife, Rose Antoine Haddad, in publishing the Ladies and Gents magazine, which has been publishing for twelve years. Editor-in-chief of Al-Muqtafa (1949-1950), and he is the author of a large number of books, most notably "Sociology" and "The Geometry of the Universe According to the Law of Relativity". He has a large collection of novels and plays between the author and the translator. He promoted his ideas through the two publications, Al-Muqtafa and Al-Hilal, which were established respectively in 1876 and 1892. Nicolas Haddad has been described as "one of the pioneers of the Arab Renaissance".
