يتلقَّى هيلتن كيوبت رسالةً بِها رسومٌ لرجالٍ يَرقصونَ فيظنُّ أنَّها مَزْحة، ولكنَّ زوجتَه إلسي تضطرِبُ جدًّا لِرؤيتها، ويستمرُ اضطرابُها وخوْفُها. يُلحُّ عليها زوجُها أنْ تُطْلِعَه على حقيقةِ الأمر، ولكنَّها تَرْفض. كان السيدُ كيوبت قد قابل إلسي، الفتاةَ الأمريكيةَ، في إحدى المناسباتِ فأحبَّها وتزوَّجَها، ولكنَّها اشترطتْ عليه ألَّا يسألَها مطلقًا عن ماضيها. وهنا يلجأُ الرجلُ إلى شيرلوك هولمز لِيحقِّقَ في الأمر؛ لأنَّه خَشي على زوجتِه التي ظلَّتْ حالتُها تزدادُ سوءًا كلَّما ظهرتْ مثْلُ هذه الرُّسومِ في حديقةِ منزلِهما أو على أبوابه. فما سرُ هذه الرسالة؟ وما طبيعةُ هذا الماضي الذي تخشاه زوجتُه؟ وهل له عَلاقةٌ بتلك الرسالة؟ هذا ما سيحاول شيرلوك هولمز فكَّ طَلاسِمه، فهل سينجحُ في ذلك؟

He studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh, and began writing during his studies, where his first stories were published before he was twenty. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is best known for his novels about Detective Sherlock Holmes, which are among the best known in crime literature. His writings varied between science fiction, plays, romantic writings, poetry, realistic literature, historical novels and satirical writings.
