بعد أن سمع كلٌّ من المحقق «جيمس باجشو» وصديقه «ويلفريد أندرهيل» دويَّ إطلاقِ نارٍ مصدرُه حديقة منزل القاضي السيد «هامفري جوين»، أسرعا إلى هناك ليجداه مقتولًا. حامت الشبهات في البداية حول خادمه وصحفي عُثر عليه مختبئًا في الحديقة، واتضح بعد شهادة «الأب براون» أن هذا الصحفي كان قد جاء لإجراء حوار مع القاضي. ولكن حين ذهب المحقق وصديقه مع «الأب براون» لفحص المنزل، اكتشفوا وجود شخص في الحديقة الأمامية للمنزل، وهو شاعر ادَّعى أنه جاء للقاء القاضي، فجرى توجيه تهمة القتل إليه وتقديمه للمحاكمة. فتُرى، هل هو القاتل حقًّا، أم أن ﻟ «الأب بروان» رأيًا آخر؟ وما دوافع القاتل؟ وما دور المرآة المكسورة في القاعة الأمامية للمنزل في كشف الجاني؟ هذا ما سنعرفه من خلال قراءة هذه القصة المثيرة
