بحَّارٌ عَجوزٌ يَنتظِرُ بفارِغِ الصَّبرِ عَوْدةَ ابنِه القُبطانِ الشابِّ على مَتنِ سَفِينتِه ليُتِمَّ مَراسِمَ زِفافِه عَلى ابْنةِ عَمَّتِه. ولكن تَأتِي الرِّياحُ بمَا لَا تَشتَهِي السُّفُن، وتَعودُ السَّفِينةُ مِن دُونِ قَائدِها، فيخرج الأبُّ في رِحْلةٍ يَبحَثُ فيها عَنِ ابنِه وَسطَ الجَلِيد؛ رِحْلةٍ تَكشِفُ قَسْوةَ البَرْد، وقَسْوةَ القَلْب؛ رِحْلةٍ يُناصِبُ فِيها رِفاقُ الدَّرْبِ بَعضُهم بَعضًا العَداء؛ رِحْلةٍ يَتصارَعُ فِيها رَجُلانِ عَلى قَلبِ امْرَأةٍ في بَردٍ قارِسٍ البَقاءُ فِيهِ للأَقْوى.
