سريان المياه إما أن يتم في مجار مكشوفة كالأنهار وقنوات الري او في مجار مغلقة مثل أنابيب المياه. تسير المياه القنوات المكشوفة تحت تأثير الجاذبية ويكون سطح الماء معرض للضغط الجوي ويكون السريان فيها نتيجة ميل القناة وليس لوجود ضغط جويس أما المجاري المغلقة الممتلئة فيعتمد السريان فيها على وجود فروق في الضغط على طول خط السريان. إذا كانت الأنابيب بأشكالها المختلفة غير ممتلئة بالماء الساري تكون معرضة للضغط الجوي على طول خط السريان فتتقابل من حيث القوانين وخواص السريان مع القنوات المكشوفة.
