Honoré de Balzac (20 May 1799 - 18 August 1850) was a French novelist who, with Flaubert, is considered the founder of realism in European literature. His prolific production of novels and stories, collectively called the Human Comedy, served as a panorama of French society in the period of the Restoration (1815-1830) and the July Monarchy (1830-1848).
