Book Description
The Mystery of 31 New Inn, a classic mystery novel by R. Austin Freeman, relates a puzzling tale from an earlier century. In the grand tradition of the great sleuths brought to life by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle comes John Thorndyke, cerebral, meticulous, British . . . and underestimated. A contested will and an unusual sickness have no apparent connection until John Thorndyke and Dr. Jervis collaborate on a labyrinth of clues, including broken glass, an upside down picture, a veiled woman, and a box of candles. This puzzle is solved with inductive reasoning and careful use of the scientific method.

R Austin Freeman (1862-1943): British writer best known for writing detective stories. He was the first to present the "Reverse Detective Story" (which describes the entire crime, first reveals the perpetrator, and then explains the investigator's attempt to solve the mystery). Born in London, he studied pharmacy, then studied medicine at Middlesex Hospital. He began writing novels and stories, many of which were the hero of the forensic investigator Dr. Thorndike, and his first stories were published in 1907, and continued to publish a story by Dr. Thorndike annually until his death in 1943.
