Book Description
People We Meet on Vacation is a contemporary romance novel about friendship, love, missed chances, and the complicated feelings that can exist between two people who know each other deeply. The story follows Poppy Wright and Alex Nilsen, two best friends who seem completely different but become one of the most important people in each other’s lives.
Poppy is lively, adventurous, funny, and outgoing. She loves traveling, meeting new people, and experiencing different places. Alex, on the other hand, is quiet, careful, organized, and more reserved. At first, they do not seem like the kind of people who would become close friends. However, after meeting in college and sharing an awkward car ride home, they slowly form a strong bond. Over the years, they create a tradition: every summer, they take a vacation together.
These vacations become the center of their friendship. No matter where life takes them, Poppy and Alex reunite each year to travel. Their trips are full of humor, strange situations, emotional conversations, and moments that bring them closer. Through these journeys, the reader sees how their friendship grows and how they understand each other in ways no one else does.
However, something happens on one of their trips that changes everything between them. The novel begins after Poppy and Alex have not spoken properly for two years. Poppy now has what she once thought she wanted: a job as a travel writer, an exciting life in New York, and the chance to visit beautiful places. Still, she feels unhappy and incomplete. When she thinks about the last time she was truly happy, she realizes it was when she was with Alex.
Wanting to fix their broken friendship, Poppy invites Alex on one more vacation. Alex agrees, and the two spend time together again while trying to avoid the pain and awkwardness between them. As they travel, old feelings return, and both characters are forced to face the truth about what they mean to each other.
The novel moves between the present vacation and flashbacks to their past trips. This structure helps readers understand how Poppy and Alex’s relationship developed over many years. It also slowly reveals what caused their separation. Their love story is not sudden; it is built through years of friendship, trust, laughter, and emotional closeness.
One of the main themes of the book is the fear of change. Poppy and Alex both struggle with admitting what they truly want because they are afraid of losing each other. Another important theme is home. For Poppy, home is not only a place; it becomes connected to the person who makes her feel understood and safe.
Overall, People We Meet on Vacation is a warm, emotional, and funny romance about two best friends who must decide whether they are brave enough to risk their friendship for love. It is a story about growing up, being honest with yourself, and realizing that happiness often depends on the people who make you feel most like yourself.
