In recent months and years he has been a prominent critic of the separation of migrant children from their families, and a supporter of rights for refugees persecuted minorities. In 2016 he was present at the shooting of police officers in Dallas and in the aftermath appealed for calm, togetherness and a different path for America - one of unity and peace.
