Book Description

Black Beauty by Anna Sewell is a timeless literary classic that has moved generations of readers since its first publication in 1877. Told from the unique perspective of a noble and spirited Thoroughbred horse, the novel offers a deeply emotional and compassionate portrayal of life in Victorian England, exploring themes of kindness, resilience, and the bond between humans and animals.

The story follows Black Beauty from his carefree days in the countryside through a series of owners and experiences that reveal both the best and worst of human nature. Through his eyes, readers witness moments of tenderness, hardship, injustice, and hope, making the novel a powerful commentary on animal welfare and moral responsibility. Sewell’s gentle yet persuasive storytelling played a significant role in shaping public attitudes toward the humane treatment of horses.

This beautifully illustrated adaptation, skillfully reimagined by Newbery Award–winning author Robin McKinley, remains faithful to the spirit and message of the original work. With clear, accessible language and a flowing narrative style, it is especially well suited for reading aloud to young children, while still retaining the emotional depth that has made Black Beauty a beloved classic for adults. The adaptation introduces new readers to the story in a way that is engaging, age-appropriate, and respectful of Sewell’s original vision.

Praised for its enduring appeal, Black Beauty continues to inspire young horse lovers and readers of all ages. As The Boston Globe notes, the story is “certain to quicken the hearts of young horse lovers,” thanks to its warmth, honesty, and unforgettable protagonist.

Anna Sewell

Anna Sowell: An English novelist, born in 1820. She was well educated at home by her mother, who could write for children. At the age of fourteen, her ankle was seriously injured, which prevented her from walking, and for the rest of her life she depended on a horse-drawn carriage, which deepened her connection with horses. Between 1871 and 1877, she wrote the manuscript of her only novel, The Black Beauty. The novel was originally intended for adults who deal with horses to urge them to treat them well, but it has become one of the most famous children's novels. Sowell died in April 1878, five months after the publication of her novel
