Book Description
When the Sky Fell on Splendor is a young adult science-fiction and mystery novel by Emily Henry, published in 2019. The story takes place in Splendor, Ohio, a small town deeply affected by a terrible steel mill explosion that happened five years before the main events of the novel. Almost everyone in the town has been touched by the tragedy in some way, either by losing someone, being injured, or watching a loved one suffer afterward.
The main character is Franny, a seventeen-year-old girl whose life has been shaped by grief. Her brother Mark has been in a coma since the explosion, and Franny still feels helpless because she cannot change what happened to him. To cope with the sadness around her, Franny becomes part of a close group of friends called The Ordinary. The group includes other teenagers who have also been affected by the tragedy. Together, they spend their time investigating abandoned places, local ghost stories, and strange legends, filming their adventures for a small YouTube audience.
At first, their videos are mostly a way to escape reality. They are fun, silly, and a distraction from the pain they all carry. However, everything changes one night when the group sees strange silver lights in the sky. Their camera captures something massive falling from above, and when they go to investigate the crash site, their lives are changed forever. What begins as another fake ghost-hunting adventure turns into something real, dangerous, and impossible to explain.
After the crash, the teenagers begin experiencing unusual abilities and frightening changes. Franny starts having a strange effect on electronics and worries that something alien may have entered her body. Other members of the group also notice mysterious powers or visions. The situation becomes even more threatening when outside forces, including the FBI, begin paying attention to them.
Although the book includes UFOs, powers, mystery, and science-fiction elements, its emotional center is grief and friendship. Franny and her friends are not just trying to solve an alien mystery; they are also trying to understand their own pain. The novel shows how people deal with tragedy in different ways. Some hide from it, some joke about it, some search for answers, and some feel trapped by the past.
One of the strongest themes in the book is human connection. The members of The Ordinary are drawn together because they understand each other’s losses. Their friendship gives them strength when the world around them becomes frightening and uncertain. Kirkus Reviews describes the novel as both “exciting” and “heartbreaking,” noting that its heart is really in Franny and her friends rather than only in the alien mystery.
Overall, When the Sky Fell on Splendor is a suspenseful and emotional story about a group of teenagers facing both supernatural danger and personal grief. It combines the atmosphere of a small-town mystery with the excitement of science fiction. The novel is a good choice for readers who enjoy stories like Stranger Things, where friendship, fear, secrets, and strange events all come together.
