Book Description
That Night by Nidhi Upadhyay is a psychological thriller and suspense novel first published in 2021 by Penguin Random House India, under the Ebury Press imprint. The novel is Upadhyay’s debut and is built around the idea that one reckless moment can shape an entire lifetime. Its full subtitle, Four Friends. Twenty Years. One Haunting Secret., reflects its central concern: the long shadow of guilt, silence, and betrayal. The book combines mystery, horror, friendship drama, and psychological suspense as it follows four women whose past returns to threaten the carefully constructed lives they have built.
The story revolves around Natasha, Riya, Anjali, and Katherine, who were once inseparable college friends. In their youth, they shared hostel rooms, secrets, dreams, and the intense closeness of young adulthood. However, their friendship is destroyed by one terrifying night. During college, the girls drink whiskey and decide to play with a Ouija board. What begins as a prank soon turns into a disaster when Sania, their difficult and disliked hostel mate, dies. The four girls are connected to the event, but instead of revealing the truth, they make a pact never to speak about it again.
For the next twenty years, the women live separate lives. They grow older, build careers, form families, and try to bury the memory of Sania’s death. Yet none of them is truly free from the past. Their guilt remains hidden beneath ordinary adulthood. The silence that once protected them also damages their friendship, because each woman carries a different version of the truth.
The suspense begins when a mysterious, faceless enemy starts targeting them. Their private lives are invaded, their secrets are exposed, and they begin receiving threats linked to that night. The women are unsure whether the danger comes from a hacker, someone who knows what they did, or something supernatural connected to Sania. The possibility that Sania’s spirit has returned for revenge gives the novel a dark, haunting atmosphere.
Forced by fear, Natasha, Riya, Anjali, and Katherine reunite and begin recounting what happened twenty years earlier. As each woman tells her version, the story becomes more complicated. Their memories do not match, and it becomes clear that none of them has been completely honest. The novel moves between past and present, slowly revealing hidden motives, betrayals, jealousies, and buried guilt.
The main events of That Night therefore center on two mysteries: what really happened to Sania, and who is now punishing the four friends. Through these questions, the novel explores the fragility of friendship and the destructive power of secrets. By the end, the truth is shown to be more complex than a simple accident or prank. The past has not stayed buried; it has followed the women into adulthood, forcing them to face the consequences of the choices they made when they were young.
