Book Description
Clementine and the Spring Trip by Sara Pennypacker is a delightful and thoughtful children’s novel that captures the excitement—and chaos—of spring through the eyes of one unforgettable heroine. For Clementine, spring is a very big deal. It’s the season when her apple tree begins to grow again, when her best friend Margaret launches into serious cleaning mode, and when the class heads off on an exciting school trip to Plimoth Plantation.
Clementine is fully prepared for Ye Olden Times, but she’s less confident about surviving lunch on the trip. The fourth graders have strict rules about making no eating sounds, and that alone feels like a major challenge. As if that weren’t enough, Clementine must also navigate the mysteries of “Olive-language” and endure the ominous presence known as The Cloud on Bus 7. With so much happening at once, the day quickly becomes more complicated than she ever expected.
As Clementine listens to a Pilgrim woman explain why she made the long journey from England, Clementine begins to think deeply about rules—who creates them, why they exist, and what they mean for the people who have to follow them. Through her observations and misadventures, Clementine faces an important question: which rules are worth keeping, and which ones might be meant to be broken?
