Book Description
Behind Architectural Filters: Phenomena of Interference is a book written by Miguel Guitart that examines the concept of architectural filters and their impact on the design and perception of built environments. The book provides insights and recommendations for architects and designers to better understand and navigate these filters.
The book begins by defining architectural filters as the various layers of cultural, social, and perceptual phenomena that influence the design and experience of architecture. Guitart then explores the different types of filters, such as historical, technological, and sensory, and how they shape our understanding of space and place.
Through case studies and examples from around the world, Guitart highlights the ways in which filters can either enhance or inhibit the quality of architecture. He also provides practical recommendations for architects and designers to better understand and work with these filters, such as incorporating local cultural traditions and utilizing sustainable technologies.
One of the key themes of the book is the importance of understanding the user's perspective in the design process. Guitart emphasizes the need for architects to be sensitive to the social and cultural contexts of their projects and to engage in participatory design processes that involve the community.
From an SEO perspective, the book's content can be optimized by using relevant keywords such as "architectural filters", "design and perception", "cultural and social phenomena", "participatory design", and "sustainable technologies". Incorporating relevant links to related resources and publications can also improve the book's search engine rankings.
In summary, Behind Architectural Filters: Phenomena of Interference is a thought-provoking and informative guide for architects and designers looking to create more meaningful and responsive built environments. Its insights and recommendations are based on years of research and practical experience, making it an invaluable resource for anyone interested in the field of architecture.
Miguel Guitart
Miguel Guitart, PhD. is an architect, author, and academic based in Buffalo, New York. Guitart received his Doctorate of Theory and Design of Architecture from the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Madrid (ETSAM), Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM), in 2014 (Summa Cum Laude), where he received his Master's in architecture in 2000 (Summa Cum Laude). His research focuses on architectural experience at the intersection of material narratives and sensory perception. His work examines architecture informed by its physical boundaries, material memory, and non-material agents, such as light and time. The work aims to enhance the connection between place, memory, and senses in opposition to trends of fragmentation and isolation leading to the loss of physical context and material memory.
Guitart has taught at the School of Architecture and Planning at the University at Buffalo since 2014, and was appointed Assistant Professor in 2020. Before joining UB, Guitart taught at University of Zaragoza (UNIZAR, 20013-2014), Pontifical University of Madrid (UPSAM, 2006-2014), and the Boston Architectural College (BAC, 2002-2003).
Guitart has been awarded by the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA), the New York State Council for the Arts (NYSCA), the Humanities Institute at the University at Buffalo, the AZ Awards in Canada, and the Alejandro de la Sota Biennial Award in Spain, among others.
