Book Description

Firas Al-Sawah

Firas Al Sawah is a prominent Syrian writer, thinker, and researcher whose name is closely associated with Arabic studies of mythology, the history of religions, ancient civilizations, and the symbolic foundations of human culture. Born in Homs in 1941, he developed a distinctive intellectual path that brought together historical research, philosophical reflection, textual comparison, and a deep interest in the religious imagination of early societies. Although he studied economics at Damascus University, his major contribution belongs to the fields of mythology and comparative religion, where he became one of the most widely read Arab authors for readers interested in the ancient Near East, sacred narratives, and the origins of religious thought. Al Sawah does not present myth as a simple tale, superstition, or primitive error. Instead, he reads myth as one of the earliest languages of the human mind, a symbolic structure through which ancient communities tried to understand creation, death, fertility, nature, kingship, divine power, evil, time, and the meaning of existence. This approach gives his writings a special place in modern Arabic intellectual culture, because he combines accessibility with seriousness and transforms complex subjects into readable, reflective, and engaging prose. One of his most influential works is “The First Adventure of the Mind,” a book that introduced many Arabic readers to the mythological worlds of Syria and Mesopotamia and showed how early myths reveal the first attempts of the human imagination to organize reality. Another major work is “The Mystery of Ishtar,” in which he explores the feminine divine, the mother goddess, and the symbolic role of fertility and sacred womanhood in early religion. His other important books include “The Religion of Man,” “Myth and Meaning,” “The Merciful and Satan,” “The Other Face of Christ,” “The Gospel as Told by the Qur’an,” “The Riddles of the Gospel,” “An Introduction to the Texts of the Ancient East,” “Encyclopedia of the History of Religions,” and “Qur’anic Stories and Their Biblical Parallels.” These titles reveal the breadth of his project, which moves from Mesopotamian and Syrian mythology to biblical, Christian, Qur’anic, Gnostic, and Eastern religious traditions. What distinguishes Firas Al Sawah is his ability to compare myths and sacred texts without reducing them to one simple explanation. He is interested in the deep structures of belief, the recurring symbols that appear in different civilizations, and the ways in which human beings create meaning through stories, rituals, divine images, and sacred memory. His books are valuable for students, researchers, general readers, and anyone interested in the intellectual history of religion. They offer a bridge between academic inquiry and literary clarity, making difficult themes such as the origin of religion, the transformation of myth, and the relationship between scripture and culture available to a broad audience. For a book website, Firas Al Sawah represents an author of lasting importance because his work helps readers enter the world of ancient myths and sacred traditions with curiosity, discipline, and critical openness. His writings show that mythology is not merely a dead archive from the distant past, but a living key to understanding the human search for order, beauty, fear, hope, and transcendence. Through his books, the reader encounters not only ancient gods and forgotten stories, but also the first questions that shaped human consciousness and continue to echo in modern thought.
