British writer, Nobel Prize laureate for literature, best known for his novel Prince of the Flies. Golding was born in Cornwall, southwest England, and studied natural sciences at Oxford University for two years before changing his major to English literature. He married in 1939, and had two children. Golding was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1983 and the Booker Prize for Literature in 1980. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1988. He was a member of the Royal Society of Literature. In 2008, the British newspaper "The Times" placed him in third place in its list of "the 50 best British writers since 1945". Golding developed heart failure, which led to death. He was buried in the village of Powerchak.
