Born in 1945, he studied English at the Faculty of Arts - Cairo University, and graduated in 1966, then obtained a diploma in Shakespearean theater at Oxford University in England in 1969, then joined the American University in Cairo and obtained a master’s degree in mass communication in 1975. Muhammad Salmawy was appointed as a language teacher English and its literature at the Faculty of Arts - Cairo University in 1966, and in 1970 he moved to Al-Ahram newspaper to work as an editor for foreign affairs, and in 1988 he was appointed as an undersecretary of the Ministry of Culture for Foreign Relations. In 1991, he was appointed editor-in-chief of the English-language newspaper Al-Ahram Weekly, then was appointed editor-in-chief of the French newspaper Al-Ahram Hebdo. In addition, Mohamed Salmawy worked as a writer for the Al-Ahram daily newspaper, and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the independent Egyptian daily Al-Masry Al-Youm, and then Chairman of the newspaper’s editorial board, on January 3, 2014.
