Al-Habib Al-Salmi is a Tunisian novelist, born in the village of Al-Ula in Tunisia in 1951. He has published eight novels and two short story collections, and a number of his stories have been translated into English, Norwegian, Hebrew and French, and his novels have also been translated into English, French, German and Italian. His first novel, "Jabal Al-Anz", was published in French in 1999, and his novel "Lovers of Bey" was published in French in 2003. Among his other novels are "Portrait of a Dead Bedouin" (1990), "Labyrinths of Sand" (1994), "Warm Pits" (1999), " Abdullah’s Secrets” (2004) and “The Scents of Marie Claire” (2009), which was shortlisted for the International Prize for Arabic Fiction in 2009 and was published in English by Arabia this year. Habib Al-Salmi has been residing in Paris since 1985.
